Rebecca Hodgson is a key figure behind 8PP’s smooth operations. In this blog, she shares insights into her journey, her role at 8PP, and what makes her work so rewarding.

What first drew you to a career in the legal field?
From a young age, I had every intention of becoming a solicitor. I completed my LPC and took my first role in a high street law firm. However, I quickly realised that traditional legal practice wasn’t for me. I found myself disillusioned with case management and the pressures of billable hours – I wanted something more dynamic. That led me to explore alternative roles in the legal sector, and I eventually found my way into research and development within legal services.
I started assisting with emerging areas of law and business case development, which really suited my strengths. I love turning complex information into concise, high-level insights – essentially the ‘elevator pitch’ version of legal analysis. That skill became invaluable as I transitioned into clerking.
How did you get into clerking?
Clerking wasn’t initially on my radar. My career took a few twists and turns, including a role with the Energy Ombudsman, where I worked in Business Development, seeing what other consumer problems could be addressed by the Ombudsman as a form of Alternative Dispute Resolution. That experience reinforced my interest in the law that directly affects people who never expected to need legal representation – whether they were in financial distress or suddenly facing a dispute.
In 2019 I started out in research and development, rolling out GDPR-related products. It was fast-paced, especially during lockdown when we were handling 30-40 cases a day. But as the team grew, I moved into a more managerial position, overseeing case management and tracking performance and the shift enabled me to step out of my comfort zone. Initially, it felt daunting to be responsible for managing workloads, allocating instructions, and forecasting workstreams. Over time I came to appreciate the valuable role of clerking so when Craig Leigh was setting up 8PP and asked me to join him it was a no brainer. I haven’t looked back.
What does a typical day look like for you at 8PP?
Busy! But in the best way. The nature of clerking means that no two days are the same. The first priority is always to check for anything urgent – whether that’s a last-minute change in counsel availability or a case that requires immediate attention.
A big part of my role involves forecasting workload and making sure we have a steady pipeline of instructions. I keep track of what’s coming in, what’s due to be billed, and what needs to be allocated across our team. That means lots of spreadsheets, diary management, and strategic thinking about how to handle hearings efficiently – whether it’s a counsel appearing in London or Carlisle, we need a pragmatic approach to ensure smooth operations.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I love the problem-solving aspect, especially when it involves helping clients facing challenging situations. While I don’t directly handle cases, I’m deeply invested in securing the best outcomes for the people we represent. This is particularly true for housing disrepair claims, where individuals are often living in unacceptable conditions. Everyone deserves a safe and habitable home, and playing a role in supporting claimants through the process and helping to resolve their issues is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.
8PP is also a uniquely collaborative chambers. Law has its traditions, but at 8PP, we embrace a more open and innovative way of working. The team is happy to share strategies, templates, and ideas – it’s not just about individual wins, but about refining our collective approach. That makes for a much more dynamic and collaborative working environment.
What’s your vision for 8PP’s future?
I’d love to see 8PP continue on the trajectory it’s on – building strong, lasting relationships with clients and growing in a way that keeps all the things that make it unique. The team are from a wide range of backgrounds, which only strengthens what we offer. If we can keep that momentum going, while staying true to our values, the future looks very exciting.
On a personal level, I’m also keen to develop my own skills in law firm and chambers management. Whether that’s through further study or a board-level role in the future, I love learning and broadening my understanding of how legal businesses function.
And outside of work? Any hobbies or interests?
Cooking is a big one—I love planning meals and spending time in the kitchen, especially when my husband (pictured with Rebecca) and I can enjoy the process together. My weekends tend to go one of two ways: either filled with events and socialising or completely low-key at home, enjoying quality time with him. I genuinely love both! I also have a real passion for gardening—it might not seem like the most obvious contrast to clerking, but it’s the perfect way to switch off and immerse myself in something completely different.
Final thoughts?
Coming into 8PP, I’ve realised how much I enjoy being part of something that’s growing and evolving. The chambers has achieved so much in its first year, and I’m excited to see where we go next. Clerking wasn’t the career I originally planned for, but it’s absolutely where I’m meant to be.
